Gene is the owner and operator, as well as, the head guide of Lazy J. He settled down in eastern central Kansas at the young age of 13 and started bow hunting. Since then, he has walked the woods, ran the river bottoms and learned the way of the whitetail. He grew an abnormal passion for bow hunting and hunting the mature whitetail. He lives and breathes it.
He has an extensive history of hunting whitetail due to his hunting ventures across the country including: Alabama, Florida, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. He has studied the land, terrain, habitat and food sources of these deer in this part of the country for 23 years now. He lives on this land and knows these deer.
When Gene isn't hunting whitetail, he is an avid Eastern/Rio Hybrid Turkey hunter, loves to fish and enjoys trapping. Gene views himself as a true outdoorsman. He also loves to involve his three children in his way of life. His oldest son, Amis, has harvested 2 whitetail over 160” at the young age of 10!

She covers all the land several times every year and relays wildlife info to the guides. Emilee helps with the bookings, financial side, and paperwork of the outfitter.
Emilee wishes that she had more time to guide hunts but she likes to make it down to the lodge a few times each week to help. She loves talking and hearing from the hunters on their successful hunts!

He’s chased ducks and geese for 25 years across Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. He’s banded ducks with Ducks Unlimited at Oak Hammock Marsh in Winnipeg, Canada, and in eastern Arkansas at Five Oaks Lodge where he also studied waterfowl and wetland conservation, ecology, and biology. Dax won his first 12 gauge when he was 11 years old by coming in first at an adult open duck calling contest in Paris, Arkansas.
“I approach waterfowl hunting a little different than other hunters. Scouting is key, everybody knows that. When scouting and I see a field or waterbody being utilized by numbers of ducks and/or geese, I don’t stop there. It gets my brain thinking about the “why”? Why are these birds using that particular habitat? What food sources are they utilizing, row crop or natural browse? One species of duck/goose or several? Are they being driven by weather or hunting pressure? I take a deep dive into understanding all those pieces of the puzzle as a tool to help me put together the best plan of attack to ensure the highest probability of success for harvest.”
Day in and day out, he puts in the work to ensure our clients have the best experience possible during their time at Lazy J Outfitters. Check out his Instagram (@daxbake) for a sample of what clients can look forward to at the end of a hunt.
